a5c7b9f00b After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.
The lives of reporter Polly Perkins and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Sullivan, intersect. For the past three years, large robots have been roaming the Earth, taking what they need, and vanishing as quickly as they appeared. Joe and his technical assistant Dex have been investigating and battling these mysterious robots. Meanwhile, many of the world's scientists have been systematically kidnapped. Dr. Jennings, believing that he is the next target, tells what little he knows to Polly. His beliefs are that Dr. Totenkopf, who has not been heard from in over thirty years, is carrying out a project he started prior to World War I, this project which may be associated with these robots. Polly and Joe, with Dex, join forces to find Totenkopf, which may not be easy due to their still antagonistic relationship. As they piece together Totenkopf's plot, Polly and Joe realize that stopping him from carrying out his grand plan of creating his version of a Utopian society may not be as easy as killing him.
I can't help it, I love this movie! Absolute fun entertainment. For those who like to categorize everything; I'd call it Retro-Fantasy-Escapism-Action-Adventure with a touch of Sci-Fi. This movie perfectly captures the character of the old Saturday Matinée serials blended with comic book tone and pacing, combine Flash Gordon with Steve Canyon. Yes, it is simplistic, cheesy, campy, unrealistic, but - that's what its trying to be, give in to the fun. You know from the beginning that the good guys will triumph at the end and the world will be saved, but I purely enjoyed sitting back and watching how they got from point A to point B. What was a little surprising, in a good way, was the strength given to the female characters who are prominent factors in the action. At first I felt the CGI background and detailing was too obviously fake, but thinking of it as a live-action comic book, the underdone CGI seems perfectly suitable. No significant negatives for me, however in the flying scenes with Polly and Joe in the cockpit just cruising along and conversing, it seemed there should be some engine noise. Considering how this movie was made with all background and details added later, I feel the acting was incredible, they had no scenery to relate to in their actions. Not sure if this is exactly a spoiler; I've watched it on DVD several times, and at the end I don't see a lens cap, maybe just another instance of Joe continually bugging Polly? Or the movie maker trying to prompt saps like me into buying the DVD to go back searching for such tidbits? Well done, waiting for more!
I&#39;ve been following Sky Captain since the first trailers because I was intrigued by the visuals and the style of it. Unfortunately, that&#39;s about all this movie has going for it.<br/><br/>In a nutshell: The pacing is terrible. It&#39;s too fast in the entire first half-hour of the movie, too slow after that. It rips through New York and Tibet just in time to get to Angelina Jolie, like she was the focus all along.<br/><br/>Sky Captain never once saves HIMSELF from a deadly situation. He&#39;s always rescued in the nick of time by somebody else. This makes for a very boring hero.<br/><br/>The story is such a mixture of clichés that it gets monotonous very very quickly.<br/><br/>The characters aren&#39;t memorable at all. Giovanni Ribisi is on screen just long enough to get kidnapped, but he&#39;s also the motivation for the rest of the movie. There&#39;s some kind of minor romance between Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law, but Paltrow&#39;s character is so annoying that we&#39;d much rather Law shoot her than kiss her. The movie doesn&#39;t care about its own setup or characters and doesn&#39;t give any weight to its events (like when people presumably die–the movie hardly misses a beat), so why should we?<br/><br/>Sky Captain is full of stupid little bits that the writer clearly just wanted to see thrown into a movie with no regard to what they do. At one point, Law goes to a radioactive mine and then meets a mine worker who&#39;s horribly mutated. This worker is on screen for under two minutes, but I bet he cost more to make-up (I hope he was made up) than roughly 30 minutes of movie. Later, Law lands his airplane on a British flying airstrip for no more reason than to inject another character into the movie and because the writer thought it would be cool.<br/><br/>This movie is a huge disappointment to anyone who isn&#39;t sucked in by the nostalgic feel and ridiculous effects. George Lucas once said, &quot;A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing.&quot; It&#39;s almost like he&#39;d already seen Sky Captain and was speaking about the future.
The filmmakers' investment in their weird visions is wildly unorthodox, but the payoff is oddly satisfying.
The two vials contained the material for Totenkopf&#39;s genetically engineered humans, his Adam and Eve. &quot;Sky Captain&quot; is Joe&#39;s call-sign, or pilot nickname. The story behind it remains unknown.
